About Melinda Hasting
Melinda is a writer, poet and songwriter who lives on the funky east side of Austin, TX. After a long career operating urban public schools for at-risk youth, Melinda quit her day job last spring to write full time.
Her background is rather unique: She had three kids by the time she was twenty-two years old and became an activist for better urban schools after her two young sons were nearly killed in a drive-by shooting in 1994.
This event led her to work with the Texas Legislature to develop policies that supported safer educational options for minority students living in urban areas.
She has been involved with twenty-eight charter schools over her career, and most recently, she was acting CEO of American Youthworks, a local high school that teaches young people cutting-edge environmental job skills.
In early 2010, after one of her closest friends died in an accident, Melinda decided to take the plunge and become a freelance writer. She cut her signature long hair, picked up her guitar and MacBook, and moved to the east side. She even got herself a kitten.
She is currently completing a book about at-risk youth and offers freelance copy writing for local businesses, musicians, and others. She has even written and recorded five songs and has learned guitar well enough to play the occasional community gig.
Melinda’s interview with Kris Kristofferson was a music feature piece in the Austin Chronicle last year, and she is a consultant to local musicians who need help promoting their music to a wider audience.
She is currently single and just fine with that.
